Door Locks and Hardware: what a handyman does
A handyman can replace a knob, lever or deadbolt with a matching one, install a stronger strike plate, and adjust a latch that will not catch. Rekeying keeps your hardware and changes which key works. Lockouts and rekeying go to a locksmith. We do not do locksmith work.

- A door that will not latch or leaves a gap at the strike plate
- A new home where you do not know who has keys
- Hardware that does not match the other doors, or is bent, rusted or worn through
What is not a handyman job
Lockouts, rekeying, key cutting, safes, master-key systems and high-security or commercial access systems go to a locksmith. Electronic access control that needs new wiring goes to a licensed electrician. Replacing a door or its frame is a separate carpentry job.
Plumbing, electrical and roofing go to licensed independent contractors.
What a visit looks like
- We check the door, frame and existing hardware first, since many sticking locks are caused by an out-of-line door and not a bad lock.
- You supply the hardware, or we match it to your existing holes and finish.
- We test the lock with the door open and closed before leaving.
- We hand you all keys and packaging that came with the new set.
Common questions
Should I rekey or replace?
Rekeying changes the key that works and keeps your current hardware, which suits a lock in good shape. Replace when the lock is worn, broken or mismatched, or you want a different style. A locksmith rekeys; we replace like for like.
Can you open a door I am locked out of?
No. Lockouts go to a locksmith, and we do not offer locksmith services. Once you are in, we can repair the door, strike or hardware that caused the problem, or replace the lock if it failed.
Why does my deadbolt stick only in some weather?
Doors swell and shift with humidity, which can pull the bolt out of line with the strike. We check the alignment and adjust the strike or hinges. If the cylinder itself is worn or the key is damaged, replacing the lock may be the fix.
Can I use a child door knob cover instead of a lock?
Door knob covers and locks can keep children out of hazardous rooms. The CPSC says a cover should be sturdy and still let an adult open the door quickly in an emergency. We can install covers or room locks and advise on placement.
