How Much Does a Handyman Cost on the North Shore?

October 21, 2026 · 5 min read

Public cost guides put typical U.S. handyman rates at about $60 to $75 per hour. Taskrabbit lists a Chicago average of $60 per hour and $184 per invoice. These are market figures, not Enhaus prices; the cost of your job depends on the list.

Hourly rates from national cost guides

Three public cost guides publish handyman rates. The figures below are typical market ranges as each guide published them. They are not Enhaus prices.

  • Thumbtack (Handyman prices, page last updated January 5, 2026): national average of $60 to $75 per hour. Low end $45 to $50 per hour; high end $100 to $125 per hour.
  • HomeAdvisor (Handyman cost guide, updated October 13, 2022): general average of $55 to $75 per hour. Independent operators about $60 to $65 per hour. Larger businesses or licensed handypeople up to $130 per hour.
  • Taskrabbit (General handyman cost guide, updated October 1, 2026): national range of $50 to $125 per hour.

The Chicago-area figure

Taskrabbit's cost table lists Chicago at a $60 average hourly rate and a $184 average invoice total.

That is the closest local figure in the guides we checked. None of them publish a separate figure for Highland Park, Winnetka or other North Shore towns.

Cost by job size

Thumbtack publishes national averages by scope of work:

  • Simple tasks (under 2 hours): $178 to $220
  • A few different projects (2 to 5 hours): $316 to $428
  • Complex or full-day projects: $701 to $1,105

Thumbtack's Chicago handyman page also states that minimum rates for handyman jobs typically range from $60 to $100.

Cost by task

HomeAdvisor's 2022 guide puts the national average handyman project at $412, with a typical range of $177 to $691. Its per-task ranges include:

  • Furniture assembly: $90 to $150
  • Painting: $100 to $200 per room
  • Shelving installation: $100 to $200
  • Weather stripping installation: $130 to $430
  • Cabinet repair: $130 to $500
  • Drywall repair: $300 to $880
  • Deck sealing: $550 to $1,300

These HomeAdvisor figures date from 2022. Labor and material costs may have changed since.

What changes the price of a job

  • Number of items. One visit with several items carries one minimum charge instead of several.
  • Materials. Ask whether the quote includes parts and materials or only labor.
  • Licensed trades. Plumbing, electrical and roofing are priced separately by licensed contractors. See Handyman vs. licensed contractor in Illinois.
  • Paperwork. Under the Illinois Home Repair and Remodeling Act, Sec. 15, residential repair work over $1,000 requires a written contract with the total price.
