How do I recaulk a bathtub?
Remove all of the old caulk, clean and dry the joint, then apply a new bead of caulk labeled for tubs or kitchens and baths. Let it cure for the time on the label before using the tub, commonly about 24 hours. New caulk over old caulk or mold does not last.
How it is usually fixed
- Cut the old bead with a utility knife at a low angle. On plastic or acrylic tubs, use a plastic razor blade to avoid scratches.
- Clean the joint, remove any mold, wipe it with rubbing alcohol and let it dry for at least 30 minutes.
- Tape both sides of the seam, cut the nozzle at about 45 degrees and run one steady bead.
- Smooth the bead, then pull the tape.
- Keep water off it for the cure time on the label. Sources commonly say 24 hours or more.
When it is not a handyman job
If the wall around the tub feels soft or caulk keeps failing, water may be getting behind it. That needs a closer look, and plumbing repairs go to a licensed plumber.
Plumbing, electrical and roofing go to licensed independent contractors.
What we do on a visit

Common questions
Silicone or acrylic latex caulk for a bathtub?
Both are used. Acrylic latex made for bathrooms is easier to remove later, and silicone is a common choice for wet areas. Pick a tub-and-tile or kitchen-and-bath product and follow its label.
How long before I can shower after recaulking?
Follow the product label. Many guides say to wait at least 24 hours, and some suggest up to 48.
Can I just clean mold off my caulk?
Surface mildew sometimes cleans off. If the dark spots return quickly, run deep into the bead or sit under it, the caulk should be removed and replaced. Mold also grows where the seam stays damp, so a dry joint matters before new caulk goes on.
How often should bathtub caulk be replaced?
There is no fixed schedule. Replace it when it cracks, peels, shrinks away from the tub or shows mold that will not clean off. Gaps let water behind the tub surround, so catching them early protects the wall.
Can you put new caulk over the old caulk?
It is not recommended. New caulk does not bond well to old caulk, soap scum or mold, so it tends to fail sooner. The old bead is cut out and the joint is cleaned and dried first, which is what makes the new seal last.
