How handyman quotes are built: hourly vs. flat pricing, minimum visit charges, materials, and what to confirm in writing before work starts.
A good handyman quote lists each task, the pricing method (hourly or flat), what the minimum visit charge covers, who buys materials and how they are billed, and what is not included. A minimum service call fee is the least a business charges to come out, even for a short job. Ask for it in writing.
What are the parts of a handyman quote?
Most quotes combine some of these pieces.
- Scope. Each task, its location and its rough size, such as "patch and paint a 2-foot hole in the hallway."
- Pricing method. Hourly, flat per task, or a mix.
- Minimum visit charge. What the business charges at least, per visit.
- Materials. Who buys them, how they are priced, and whether you will see receipts.
- Exclusions. What the quote does not cover, such as hidden damage found once a wall is opened.
- Timing and payment. When work starts, how long it should take, and when payment is due.
What is the difference between hourly and flat pricing?
Hourly pricing charges for time spent. It suits jobs where the scope is unclear. Ask for an estimate of hours, how travel and setup time are counted, and whether time is billed in full hours or smaller increments.
Flat pricing gives one price for a defined task. It suits clear jobs, like hanging a set of shelves. Ask what would change the price, such as finding rot behind a wall.
Many businesses use both: flat for defined tasks, hourly for open-ended ones. Neither is better. The point is that you know which one applies before the work starts.
What does a minimum service call fee mean?
A minimum service call fee, also called a minimum visit or trip charge, is the smallest amount a business bills for a visit. It exists because each visit includes travel, setup, and time that a business cannot fill with other work.
Questions to ask:
- Does the minimum cover a set amount of time on site, or just the trip?
- Is travel billed separately?
- If the job takes longer, how is the extra time billed?
- If I add more items, does the minimum still apply once, or per item?
On the last question, a visit with several items usually carries one minimum, not several. That is why we suggest grouping small jobs. See How to get more done in one handyman visit.
Other platforms show similar structures. On Taskrabbit, for example, the help center says a Trust & Support fee is added as a percentage of the hourly rate, and Taskers' hourly minimums appear in the list. Check the checkout screen on any platform for the final total.
How should materials be handled?
Ask which of these applies:
- Customer supplies. You buy the items. Confirm that the exact product is right before the visit.
- Handyman supplies, billed at cost. You see the receipt.
- Handyman supplies, with a markup. The markup should be stated up front.
- Included in a flat price. The quote says which materials are covered.
Under the Illinois Home Repair and Remodeling Act, Sec. 15, a written contract for work over $1,000 has to state the total cost, with parts and materials listed with reasonable particularity. The Attorney General's Know Your Rights guide says the contract should include parts and materials and specify detail such as quality and grade. Read the Act text on ilga.gov, and see our summary in What does the Illinois Home Repair and Remodeling Act require?
What do market cost guides say?
We do not list prices in this article because they depend on your list. For third-party figures, with their dates and sources, see How much does a handyman cost on the North Shore? Those numbers are market figures from other companies, not Enhaus prices.
How do I compare two quotes?
1. Put them side by side: same tasks, same materials, same exclusions.
2. Check whether one is hourly and the other flat.
3. Check whether each includes the minimum visit and travel.
4. Check what each excludes.
5. Do not choose on the lowest number alone. A low quote that leaves out materials or cleanup is not lower.
Which items on my list will not be handyman work?
Plumbing, electrical and roofing go to licensed independent contractors. They will quote separately. See Handyman vs. licensed contractor in Illinois.
FAQ
Is a quote the same as an estimate?
Not always. An estimate is a best guess that may change. A quote is meant to be a price you can rely on. Ask which one you are getting and what could change it.
Can I ask for the price per task?
Yes. A per-task breakdown makes it easier to compare quotes and to drop an item if the total is too high.
Does the minimum charge apply if I add items on the day?
Ask before the visit. Many businesses apply one minimum to the whole visit, but practices vary.
What if the job turns up something unexpected?
Ask the handyman to stop, show you, and give you a revised price before continuing. Get the change in writing, even as a text message.
