Why Do Some Handymen Turn Down Small Jobs, and Is a Small Job Worth Hiring For?

October 22, 2026 · 5 min read

Travel, set-up and minimum visits make a single small fix costly for a handyman. Bundling a list into one visit makes small jobs worth it for you.

Some handymen decline small jobs because driving, loading tools, set-up and cleanup take about the same time whether the fix takes 15 minutes or two hours. That is why many set a minimum visit. A small job is worth hiring for when you bundle several items into one visit and share that one minimum.

Why do some handymen turn down small jobs?

A handyman's day is made of visits, and each visit has fixed time that has nothing to do with the repair:

  • Booking and messages. Talking through the job, looking at photos, confirming a time.
  • Travel. Thumbtack's handyman price guide says distance, mileage and gas all affect labor costs, and that jobs far from a handyman's other work can cost more.
  • Set-up. Parking, loading in tools, protecting floors, finding the problem.
  • Parts runs. A hardware store trip for one part can take longer than the repair.
  • Wrap-up. Cleanup, payment, notes.

Thumbtack says a minimum service fee helps a handyman account for the time it takes to book a client, arrive at the site and set up. If a 20-minute fix would pay less than the time around it, some handymen would rather not take it. That is a business decision, not a judgment about you.

The Better Business Bureau notes a related point in its tips for hiring in a tight market (January 27, 2025): your project may not be high on a contractor's priority list, and communicating clearly can make them more willing to take it on.

What is a minimum visit, and how does it work?

A minimum visit is the least you pay for a visit no matter how short the work is. Taskrabbit's handyman cost guide (updated October 1, 2026) says it is common for handymen to charge a minimum, typically one to two hours, so a 15-minute task can be billed as a full hour. Thumbtack says that for a handyman who charges hourly, the minimum is usually the equivalent of a minimum number of hours. Both are third-party figures, not Enhaus prices.

Is a small job worth hiring a handyman for?

It can be, if you think of the visit and not the task. One loose cabinet hinge is a poor use of a visit. Eight small things is a good one.

A small job is usually worth it when:

  • It is safety-related: a loose stair railing, a wobbly handrail, a smoke alarm out of reach, a door that will not latch.
  • It will get worse if it waits: failed caulk around a tub, a gap in exterior trim, a sagging gutter.
  • You cannot do it safely yourself: ceiling work, heavy items, tall ladders.
  • It has been on your list for months and there are other things next to it.

It is usually not worth a separate visit when it is a single five-minute task you could safely do yourself and nothing else is waiting.

How does bundling a list help?

Bundling spreads the fixed cost of a visit over many tasks. Thumbtack says that because handymen who charge hourly often have a minimum, a 20-minute task may be billed as a full hour, so it recommends grouping smaller jobs to make the most of the handyman's time and your money. Taskrabbit gives the same tip: combine a few things into one visit.

In plain terms, three tasks in three visits can mean three minimums. The same three tasks in one visit means one. See How to get more done in one handyman visit for how to plan it.

How do I prepare a small-job list that gets a yes?

1. Write each item as one line. "Kitchen: cabinet door hangs crooked." "Back hall: door sticks at the top."

2. Group by room or area. It helps the handyman plan the order.

3. Add two photos per item. One wide shot and one close-up. Taskrabbit says pictures help a handyman estimate more accurately.

4. Name the materials if you know them. Paint color, hardware finish, part numbers.

5. Say what is urgent. A leaking faucet comes before a squeaky hinge. Plumbing and electrical issues go to licensed independent contractors, so flag those separately.

6. Clear the area. Taskrabbit notes that if the handyman has to prep or clean first, it can add time and cost.

Keep a running list on your phone. When it reaches five or six items, send it.

FAQ

Why was I told a handyman does not do small jobs?

Often because of the fixed time around a visit: travel, set-up and the minimum. Asking whether your item can be added to a longer list can change the answer.

Is a minimum charge a scam?

No. Thumbtack and Taskrabbit both describe minimums as common. The thing to check is that it is disclosed before the visit and applies once per visit.

What if I only have one small job?

Ask what the minimum covers. If it is close to the cost of a few tasks, look around the house for other items worth doing in the same visit.

What should I not give a handyman?

Plumbing, electrical and roofing work. Those go to licensed independent contractors.
